What’s on for International Men’s Day? One Week to Go
International Men’s Day is on 19 November, and events are kicking off throughout this month. From local community groups to local governments and business, people are preparing to mark the day.
The City of Palmerston – always a supporter of International Men’s Day – will celebrate “men’s health, wellbeing and positive role models” with a series of activities at the local recreation centre, including a gentlemen’s tie-tying competition, a complimentary breakfast and Man Walk to the CBD, and a panel discussion with local men’s health advocates and community leaders. The Blackburn Men’s Walk and Talk in Melbourne will take a 5km stroll around the lake before finishing at a local café. Find out more
For free admission, Frankston will celebrate men in the community at the Hotel Lona in Victoria, where there will be fun competitions, positive conversations about men’s health, well-being and community support, show bags filled with vouchers and information on local resources, and networking opportunities with other men in the community. And yes, there will be food and light refreshments. However the organisers ask that men reserve their spot. Find out more
Also, in Melbourne on Sunday, 24 November, men are invited to the Moonee Valley Bowls Club for a BBQ lunch, bowls and health awareness talks, all for $10, but bookings are essential. Find out more
Queensland is well-represented this year. The Department of Health is holding a speaker event with a light lunch at the Upper Plaza in Brisbane, free admission. Find out more
The Master Plumbers’ Association of Queensland is hosting a trade show and breakfast supporting charity partner, This is A Conversation Starter (TIACS). The event is also free to attend. Find out more
The Men’s Toolbox Ride occurs on Sunday, 17 November, when approx. 100 bikers will ride for the men in their lives. The three-hour group ride starts at Coles Express in Brendale. Entry is $99 and includes ride, lunch and a T-shirt. Find out more
In Sydney, the Auburn Community Centre has reserved the afternoon to celebrate men’s health and talk about it. “This event is all about recognising the importance of men's well-being and promoting healthy lifestyles,” say the organisers. “Whether you're a man yourself or you care about the men in your life, this is the perfect opportunity to learn more about "what is primary prevention? what can you do?"
