Men’s Health Awards for Mount Isa mark International Men’s Day 2022

Mount Isa is again giving men’s health workers deserved recognition via their 2022 International Men’s Day Awards.

The awards are open to all ages with the intention of highlighting positive role models in the community and raising awareness about men’s health ahead of IMD on Saturday, November 19.

There are three award categories this year:

2022 Man of Achievement – Open to all ages; a nominee who demonstrates strong leadership, is a positive role model with the design, implementation or promotion of a project that has helped their district, local sporting groups, schools/charities/non-for-profit groups, events, organisations/workplaces or families either in a paid or unpaid volunteer role.

2022 Local Hero - Open to all ages; a nominee who demonstrates strong leadership and is a positive role model for the Mount Isa Community through volunteer unpaid work.

2022 Youth Leader - Open to ages 18 years and under; a nominee who demonstrates strong leadership and is a positive role model to their own peer group & others.

Nominations are now open and must be submitted using this form by 5pm on Friday, October 28, 2022.

In 2021, Malachi Munns won the Mount Isa Youth Leader Award in recognition of his involvement in a wide range of community and school activities at the Good Shepherd Catholic College. He was seen as a role model to younger Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, represented the College at NAIDOC celebrations and Reconciliation Week and welcomed primary school-aged students visiting the senior campus.

A “caring but unassuming man,” Peter Tuppurainen was named the Mount Isa Local Hero. Peter was described as the embodiment of community spirit, not only supporting local groups and events through business sponsorship but also taking a hands-on approach with family and friends, and with the Mt Isa community.

The Mount Isa Man of Achievement was James Derrick, who started his own boxing club five years ago, and helped many disengaged and withdrawn young people gain confidence and learn new skills. At his own expense, James and his wife Kerry took competitors to boxing tournaments thousands of kilometres away and helped them secure apprenticeships. All of this was done on a voluntary basis.

The 2022 award winners will be announced at a special International Men’s Day dinner on November 12 at the Buchanan Park Xstrata Entertainment Complex. Included as part of the celebrations and $95 ticket price is the Mount Isa Show Demolition Derby and Lawn Mower Race. FIND OUT MORE
