Finding the right speaker for International Men’s Day
International Men’s Day (IMD), celebrated annually on November 19th, offers an excellent opportunity to spotlight the challenges, achievements, and contributions of men in society.
This year’s theme is Men’s Health Champions. A good way to mark the day in an impactful way is by holding a community event with a guest speaker, ideally someone who can who can engage, inspire, and provoke thought during your IMD celebration.
The International Men’s Day website has a growing list of speakers who specialise in men’s health issues, such as the founder of Men’s Resources Tasmania, Jonathan Bedloe, and the founder of Dads Group Thomas Docking, who knows a lot about perinatal mental health. Glen Poole, the CEO of the Australian Men’s Health Forum, is an excellent option with a wealth of experience in the men’s sector, and recognised internationally for his work to stop male suicide.
With so many excellent options, including eight who are managed by talent agency ICMI, here are a few pointers on how to select the right speaker and prepare for your event.
Define Your Event’s Theme
Before reaching out to potential speakers, clarify the theme of your event. This year’s IMD theme is Men’s Health Champions, with four sub-themes:
-
Building healthy communities!
-
Look out for your mates!
-
Take Action, Stay Healthy!
-
Creating a healthier future!
Defining your event’s purpose will help you narrow down your speaker options and ensure their message aligns with your vision.
Seek Out Experts or Advocates
When it comes to sensitive topics such as mental health, wellness, and masculinity, it’s important to choose speakers with expertise and experience. Psychologists, social workers, authors, or men’s health advocates often provide insightful perspectives backed by research, as do those with lived experience. Look for people who not only have professional credentials but also the ability to connect with an audience through engaging, down-to-earth storytelling.
Consider Diversity
International Men’s Day represents men from all walks of life, and your speaker should reflect that diversity. Choose a speaker who represents the diversity in race, age, profession, and life experiences to resonate with a wider audience.
Personal Stories
Speakers who share their personal experiences often make the most lasting impression. A man who has faced adversity, overcome obstacles, or worked to break down barriers in his own life can deliver a powerful message of hope, strength, and vulnerability.
Book Early and Provide Guidance
To secure the best speaker, start your search early. Once booked, share clear expectations, including the theme and tone of your event. This helps the speaker tailor their presentation to your audience and ensure a meaningful connection on International Men’s Day. Consider downloading an IMD poster and customise it with the details of your event.
