Celebrating the organisations who support men and boys
From 22-24 October, the 30th National Men's Health Gathering in Brisbane welcomed 200+ delegates to share insights, discuss programs, and explore a way forward for men's health.
Individuals, organisations, politicians, volunteers, health workers and researchers from Australia joined with international guests to discuss what is happening to improve the lives and health of men and boys.
There are literally thousands of unsung heroes stepping up to help men and boys across Australia. Some organisations receive grants, and others, like Men’s Sheds, Movember, and Healthy Male, benefit from substantial government support. But the majority do not. They keep going, driven by a passion and purpose to reverse some of the alarming statistics and challenges facing men and boys in the 21st century that have led to high suicide rates and the many preventable illnesses that take 50 men’s lives a day.
In 2022, a total of 28,509 people under 75 died from potentially avoidable causes, comprising 18,080 males and 10,429 females. For example:
- 4 in 5 heart deaths under 65 are men
- Men are 50% more likely to die from cancer than women
- 7 in 10 alcohol-related deaths are men
- 3 in 4 road deaths are men
- 7 in 10 young people who die are boys and young men
- Suicide is the leading killer of men under 65

Following the Brisbane Gathering, the Australian Men’s Health Forum started gathering a list of more than organisations that support men and boys. These unsung heroes will be celebrated on AMHF websites and social media accounts in the lead-up to International Men’s Day 2025 and throughout November in a widespread tribute, underpinning the International Men's Day theme for this year, Supporting Men and Boys.
