Barriers to inclusion - the experiences of culturally diverse men in Australian workplaces

One of a series of webinars hosted by the Australian Men's Health Forum to mark the intersection between Inclusion at Work Week and International Men's Day 

Overview: Our panel of experts will share their personal and professional experience of the barriers that culturally and linguistically diverse men can experience in Australian workplaces, providing insights on the actions we can all take to make our workplaces more inclusive for CALD men and their communities 

Panellists:

Ukash Ahmed, Program Coordinator and Facilitator and the  Multicultural Communities Council of South Australia and is known for his work empowering Culturally and Linguistically Diverse men to become champions for men's health in their communities. Ukash was born in Somalia and fled his home country when he was 10 years old,  living in the world’s largest refugee camp in Kenya for 18 years before arriving in Australia in 2009. He was recently voted Men's Health Champion for South Australia at the National Men's Health Awards. 

Victor Adeseolu is an award-winning Social Worker and workplace health, safety and wellbeing expert who specialises in cultural inclusion programs, for managers, supervisors, employees and employers to create a healthy workplace environment, drawing from research and lived experience. Victor has over a decade of global experience having worked in the UK, West Africa, UAE, USA and Australia. He previously helped establish the first African Men support group in Western Australia, bringing together men from 54 different African nations. 

Jal David is the Manager of Settlement and Youth Services at Migrant Resource Centre Tasmania (MRC Tas) where his work is deeply informed by his lived experience and driven by a commitment to equity and inclusion. Jal holds a Master of Social Work from the University of Tasmania and is a passionate advocate for social justice, with a focus on education, employment, advocacy, and community engagement. Born in South Sudan and raised in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya, Jal resettled in Australia more than 20 years ago and is a founding member of the Black Scorpions Tasmania social soccer team. 

Richard Lau is the Co-Founder and Director of SHER Foundation, Australia’s first multicultural men’s mental health charity. Migrating from Hong Kong to Sydney in 2014, Richard experienced language barriers, social isolation, and the challenges of rebuilding a life in a new country. He went on to complete a Psychology degree at UNSW, contribute to major Sydney Metro projects, and now works with NSW Health advancing digital infrastructure to improve care for clinicians, patients, and families. At SHER, Richard draws on both lived and professional experience to lead culturally safe programs which to date has supported over 2,000 CALD men across 15+ LGAs in Greater Sydney.
